Over four thousand people got inside Congress Theater to see Rusko last night while a large line outside with tickets were denied entry starting early as 10:45pm. Chicago Police blocked off the street on Milwaukee Ave. and the crowd outside was about to riot. Security at the venue asked everyone to leave, but the crowd of 17+ would rebel against.
I was in a group of twenty people, the first half left around 10:15pm and gained entry into the venue. We left about half hour later. We arrived to a large crowd yelling at the security. You could see hundreds of kids walking down Milwaukee Ave. heading towards The Congress Theater to find disappointment.
Rumors started escalating that a 17 year old over-dosed on the drug ketamine. Promoters for another club outside said Rusko injured himself. A short man with dreads promoting for a nearby nightclub stated that he was the opener for Rusko and he saw it himself. It was obviously bullshit. He wouldn’t have been outside and there was only one opener, locals Midnight Conspiracy.
We texted our friends inside and they said they were having a blast, that it was packed, and wondered why we weren’t joining them.
Why did Congress deny entry with those who bought tickets? Did the promoters oversell tickets? Were there too many kids under 21 messed up on drugs? As of now there is no official statement from Rusko or the show promoters React Presents.
According to Congress security, you can get a full refund by contacting Clubtix.com or the show promoters, React Presents (www.reactpresents.com).
05/01/11 UPDATE: Chicago Fire Marshals stopped allowing people entry. React Presents and the Congress Theater had no control over the matter. Everyone was simply doing their jobs, unfortunately the fire marshals ruined a lot of peoples evening. An official statement from React Presents can be read here.
